Everything You Need to Know Before, During, and After Your SMP Treatment

Got questions about scalp micropigmentation?

We’ve got you covered. Whether you’re just starting to explore SMP or you’re ready to book, this FAQ covers the things people ask us most - like how it feels, how long it lasts, and what the healing process is really like. Still unsure? Just give us a shout!

Do I have to book?

  • Yes!  We can not accommodate walk-ins.

  • Booking is advisable to avoid a wasted journey.  Our treatments require a consultation in advance.

How do I book?

  • Message us on WhatsApp or call us.  All methods of contact are on our contact us page.

What is Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)?

  • Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a minimally invasive cosmetic treatment that uses tiny, natural-looking pigment deposits to create the appearance of a fuller head of hair in low-density or completely bald areas. Ask a Question on WhatsApp

Is SMP suitable for everyone?

  • It’s a versatile solution for both men and women, ideal for anyone who wants a full clean-shaven look or the illusion of thicker hair with minimal maintenance.

  • SMP is suitable for all types of hair loss, including alopecia and male pattern baldness. However, booking a consultation with our SMP artist is important to determine if you're a good candidate.

Can SMP work for women with thinning hair?

  • Absolutely!  SMP works very well on women with thin or thinning hair by creating the illusion of density on the scalp, giving the appearance of thicker, fuller hair, providing a natural, seamless appearance and boosting confidence. It’s an excellent option to restore the look of volume without surgery or extensive treatments.

Can SMP be used to conceal scars?

  • Yes, SMP can camouflage scar tissue, including scars from hair transplants, by implanting pigment into the scarred area to match the surrounding scalp.

Is Scalp Micropigmentation painful?

  • SMP is generally well-tolerated, and most clients describe it as a mild sensation but others may have some minor discomfort. The level of discomfort can vary depending on individual sensitivity, but our experience and care ensure the process is as comfortable as possible.

How long does the procedure take?

  • Each case is bespoke, but on average, SMP takes place over several sessions, with a standard session lasting 2-5+ hours, depending on the amount of area that requires treatment. For example, someone with longer hair and needing treatment on their entire head will take much longer than a client with a bald/shaved head needing just their crown area treated.

Does SMP look natural?

  • With SMP, the results are remarkably natural-looking replicating the look of hair follicles and mimicking a closely shaved head or adding the illusion of extra density with thinning hair. The treatment is highly customisable to match your desired look, skin tone, and natural hair colour. The results are immediate and long-lasting, giving you a renewed sense of confidence and a transformed appearance.

Is SMP Permanent?

  • SMP is a long-lasting solution, and the pigments can stay sharp up to 4 years with proper care and maintenance. Top-ups can be carried out if there is any fading and usually require only one session.

Is SMP the same as a regular tattoo?

  • SMP shares some similarities with tattooing, but they are not the same. The depth at which SMP is performed and the technique are very different from regular tattooing. The machines, needles, and pigments we use for treatments are specifically made for SMP.

How much does SMP cost?

  • The cost of SMP varies depending on factors like the extent of hair loss and the complexity of the procedure. At INK SMP we offer discounts to clients who permit us to use their before and after images or video testimonials online.

Is SMP safe?

  • Yes, SMP is a safe and minimally-invasive procedure. We use high-quality pigments and sterile equipment.  Our SMP practitioner is fully trained to follow strict hygiene and safety protocols. Since it’s a non-surgical procedure, the risk of complications is minimal, and there’s no downtime required.

Are there any limitations with SMP?

  • While SMP is an excellent solution for most people, it’s important to understand its capabilities. SMP does not regrow hair; instead, it creates the appearance of hair. It’s not ideal for those with specific skin conditions or individuals with certain medical concerns.

  • A consultation with our team will help determine if SMP is right for you.
